and become a vital part of the Network of Safety.

Every day, someone in your community faces thoughts of suicide.

And every day, caring people like you have the power to help keep
them safe.

LivingWorks ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) gives you the confidence, knowledge and practical tools to intervene when it matters most.

You don’t need to be a counselor or mental health professional – just someone who’s willing to care, to listen and to take action.

When you become a Suicide First-Aid Helper, you become a vital part of the Network of Safety – where people everywhere are using their skills to help save lives and bring hope.

Why it matters?

Suicide can touch anyone – and yet, many of us aren’t sure what to say or do when someone might be at risk.

That’s why LivingWorks created LivingWorks ASIST over 40 years ago – to empower ordinary people to provide lifesaving help in extraordinary moments.

Across more than 30 countries, millions have been trained in LivingWorks ASIST to recognize signs of suicide, offer compassion support and connect people to safety.

This isn’t just training – it’s community-wide readiness.

What you’ll learn - and how it feels

LivingWorks ASIST is more than training – it’s an experience that changes how you see your role in suicide prevention.

Over two engaging days led by certified LivingWorks Trainers, you’ll learn through real conversations, group practice and shared reflection in a safe, supportive environment.

Questions about LivingWorks ASIST?

It’s natural to have questions before starting something new – especially something this meaningful.

Here are the answers to some of the most common ones:

The LivingWorks integrated training system is a connected pathway of programs, tools and resources that build suicide prevention skills across entire communities. Each training program plays a specific role – from learning to recognize when someone may be thinking about suicide, to knowing how to support them with confidence and compassion, to staying connected with resources long after training ends.

LivingWorks Start is our self-paced online training that introduces foundational suicide awareness skills. It helps people learn how to recognize when someone may be struggling and how to offer initial support – all in as little as one hour. Many organizations use LivingWorks Start as an accessible entry point or primer before attending in-person training.

LivingWorks safeTALK (half-day) builds on this foundation by teaching people how to notice when someone may be thinking about suicide, ask directly and compassionately about their safety and connect them to further help. It’s ideal for building broad community readiness.

LivingWorks ASIST (two days) provides the most in-depth, practical intervention skills. Learners learn how to engage directly with a person thinking about suicide, reduce immediate risk and co-create a personalized Safety Plan that promotes hope, safety and connection.

While each program stands alone, they are intentionally designed to complement each other as a continuum of learning. Many people begin with LivingWorks Start, gain confidence through LivingWorks safeTALK and later deepen their intervention skills with LivingWorks ASIST – strengthening both individual preparedness and community capacity.

With the introduction of LivingWorks Connect, our secure digital platform and mobile app, this integrated system extends far beyond the training room. Helpers can revisit key concepts, access tools and resources and stay connected to their learning and contribute to a growing Network of Safety.

When organizations use LivingWorks Start, LivingWorks safeTALK, LivingWorks ASIST and LivingWorks Connect together, they create a strong, connected and sustainable suicide prevention system – a true Network of Safety where more people are prepared, supported and ready to help.

LivingWorks ASIST is designed for anyone aged 16 and older who wants to build the skills and confidence to support someone thinking about suicide. You do not need a professional background to attend. In fact, research shows that most people who experience suicidal thoughts reach out first to family, friends, coworkers or someone they trust in their community – not to a clinician or crisis service.

With more than 700,000 people dying by suicide each year worldwide, we need a broad, community-wide response. Evidence indicates that while many of us truly want to help, we often feel unsure about what to say or how to intervene in a way that reduces risk and increases safety.

That’s why LivingWorks has spent over 40 years developing and refining LivingWorks ASIST:
to equip people across every part of a community – workplaces, schools, faith groups, frontline services, sports teams, volunteer organizations and everyday settings – with  practical, proven suicide intervention skills.

LivingWorks ASIST is for you if:

  • You want to feel prepared to recognize when someone may be thinking about suicide.
  • You want practical guidance on how to have a supportive conversation.
  • You want to learn how to help someone move toward safety, hope and connection.
  • You are part of a community, organization or family that values mental health and wellbeing.

Whether you're a teacher, coach, manager, service provider, parent, peer or community member, Livingworks ASIST gives you the tools to make a life-saving difference.

No. LivingWorks ASIST is delivered strictly face-to-face. The program is designed to teach complex, practice-based intervention skills that rely on real-time interaction, role play, observation and coached practice. These elements are essential for building confidence and competence in having difficult, high-stakes conversations about suicide – something that cannot be replicated effectively in a digital or virtual environment.

If you’re looking for an online option, LivingWorks Start offers a flexible, self-paced introduction to suicide alertness skills that can be completed anytime, anywhere. It prepares Learners to recognize when someone may be thinking about suicide and take initial steps to connect them to safety.

LivingWorks ASIST workshops are facilitated by registered LivingWorks Trainers. To become certified, Trainers must complete an intensive LivingWorks ASIST Training for Trainers (T4T), develop deep familiarity with the program and meet all quality-assurance requirements. Trainers also maintain their skills by delivering workshops regularly and participating in ongoing quality control.

If needed, LivingWorks can help identify Trainers with specific expertise in your sector, discipline or region.

LivingWorks Connect is the digital companion to our integrated training system, designed to strengthen skills, provide immediate resources and build a safer, more connected community long after training ends. After completing the enhanced version of LivingWorks ASIST, you will be automatically prompted to download, log in and connect to the LivingWorks Connect mobile app. You can download LivingWorks Connect from either the Google Play store or Apple Store.

LivingWorks ASIST-trained Helpers play a vital role in suicide prevention, and LivingWorks Connect supports them long after the two-day workshop is complete. LivingWorks ASIST Helpers use the platform to review elements of the intervention model through its built-in CareGuide to refresh their confidence, access resources that help them stay prepared to support someone at risk. Through their connections in the training event community, they can also stay connected to their Trainer’s updates and reminders, as well as build connections with other Helpers.

Each LivingWorks ASIST Helper who has taken the enhanced program, also receives a LivingWorks Start Learner Pass to use or share with someone they choose – expanding the Network of Safety by empowering someone else to learn basic suicide prevention skills.

Across all programs, LivingWorks Connect extends learning before, during and after training ends – strengthening the Network of Safety throughout all communities. It’s not just a digital add-on – it’s the infrastructure that helps keep Helpers connected, confident and ready to play their part in building suicide-safer communities.
