The third annual Construction Working Minds Summit kicks off in Kansas City, Missouri on Feb. 26-29. LivingWorks has attended the conference since its inception, and 2024 will mark our third consecutive year of joining industry colleagues to work toward the collective vision of positively impacting construction communities around the world.

Construction Working Minds is a summit that aims to uplift mental health, suicide prevention, and addiction recovery. The summit is geared to promote these topics with a specific emphasis on construction communities.

LivingWorks’ Suicide Prevention Manager in Central USA, Sam Smith, and Suicide Prevention Manager in SE USA, Alan Mednick, will be attending the summit. Smith says the goal for the summit is to make connections and let construction communities know that LivingWorks is here to help support them.

“The key for construction companies and communities is to start at the beginning and let everyone know that it’s okay to talk about mental health and suicide prevention,” says Smith. “Major decision makers will be attending, and they are going to be looking at what they can do to improve the mental health of their construction workers.”

For construction companies, Smith believes taking the initiative to let everyone know that talking about mental health and suicide prevention is important is a great starting point. From there, using LivingWorks Start, safeTALK and ASIST training courses can help build a Network of Safety for construction communities to keep all members safer from suicide.

Smith has worked with construction companies out of Colorado where upwards of 40 team members were trained in LivingWorks Start. He says promoting mental health and suicide prevention in the workplace can play a massive role in keeping everyone safer from suicide.

“Don’t be afraid to put 9-8-8 or LivingWorks posters up in your construction workplace. Don’t let the stigma or the myths deter you from doing that. Those visuals let everyone know that it’s okay and important to talk about mental health and suicide prevention.”
